Anxiety and depression both have a genetic componant and an environmental componant.
I can beat myself up knowing I have given my daughters difficult roads to travel.
I can be proud of my daughters for their strength, resilience, tenacity and problem solving abilities, some of which are probably also genetic and environmental.
I can watch them blaze their own trails. They may have difficult roads to travel, but they are not trenches.
From here on, I choose pride and trailblaze watching. And walking them through young adulthood, awkwardly balancing stepping in and stepping back. I figure if I get it mostly right we will be okay.
