In a family of extreme introverts, Dougie is our absolute extrovert.

He loves people.

He loves dogs.

He loves his Bearded Dragon.

Dougie and his Beardie bestie Lucky!

He would love cats if they would let him.

He found a play group with dogs as extroverted and excited about life as he is.

Solid work Doug!

“Take Dougie to the Dogtopia where I worked,” my coworker Megan recommended recently.

So off we went to the Dogtopia in Papillion. We love it. Doug loves it.

Only it turns out, Megan worked at another Dogtopia. The one in LaVista. I am still figuring out Omaha and the surrounding areas. It has literally been almost a half century that I have lived in Omaha. I don’t think I am gonna figure it out you all.

But what a happy accident!

The only one among us who LOVES new adventures. There are lessons to be learned here I suppose!

Dougie has been lost without his best friends Joy the Puppy and Periwinkle Pug. We all have.

Joy and Dougie on a boat on a Colorado lake - one of all of our happy places

Dougie and his Puggy Periwinkle

He has recently been getting VERY sad when we leave for work in the morning, to the point he will not eat breakfast if Blue and Russ and I are getting ready for work.

Happy Dog has been sad

We increased the walks. We increased the toys. Doug continued to mourn.

Who knew two ancient dogs who slept all day would leave such a void in Dougie’s life? We knew. We should have known. Joy and Periwinkle were the best, and we all miss them both terribly.

So much so that every single Basset and Beagle Reacue of the Heartland dog and puppy who passed through became a maybe. And two baby Joy dogs (they were not ALL Lab - they had Basset and Beagle in them!) became dangerous probablies. Do not worry - they both landed in wonderful homes! As do they all.

So we turned to day care to help Doug. Which honestly, will be better for him and better for us than a new pup right now. Not that handing over those tiny Joy pups was not painful. It was.

But.

This is such a bright spot and will be so much fun for Doug that I am only excited.

Thank you for the great idea Megan. Thank you Dogtopia (of Papillion). We are so excited to have Doug in your care and get to know you!

Stay tuned for shenanigans that are sure to ensue. They always do with Doug!
