THE PIGGY IGLOO

THE PIGGY IGLOO

I received a Kaytee Igloo to review from Chewy.com.

FinchDVM 10779.jpg

Everyone who has had a rabbit or rodent seems to have had one of these! (It was difficult to find a friend who did not already have one!) And I got a lot of good feedback on the igloo.

Our guinea pig Piggy loved his. He did not climb it as some more adventurous piggies might, but he did like to spend time in his igloo.

From friends on the Igloo...

"My rats loved those things." -Jeremy Coffey

FinchDVM 10786.jpg

"My rats used them. The guinea pigs never cared to go in them but would push them around. All my rabbits were too big." -Alicia Weiland

"Have one for my piggie. Good quality. Easy clean. Sort of large for a pig, but he enjoys it." -Monica Massengale

FinchDVM 10782.jpg

"Penelope has some thing similar, and loves it!" -Nicole Dawson

"I haven't used them for my own piggies but we use them at Town and Country all the time!" -Kellie Marie

FinchDVM 10783.jpg

"I think my gerbils would destroy it." -Sara Tifft"

FinchDVM 10785.jpg

We always had to avoid these with our gerbils. They would have ingested pieces of it, too. We stuck with wooden or cardboard houses." -Kylee Karre

"I no longer have guinea pigs but when I did, they loved these. They would even move them like little turtles to the food dish." -Angela Bohling

FinchDVM 10784.jpg

"We had one that the piggies fought over. They loved it and did the turtle thing too--mainly because they knew if they left it, the other would steal it. I never figured out what the knobby things on the top were for..." -Cathy Babcock

Too small for almost any dog!

Luna is not impressed.

For a dog who constantly wags her tail, Joy found the igloo quite restricting.

So there you have it! Too small for (dogs and) bunnies. Not ideal for chewers like gerbils. But for guinea pigs and rats, both of whom appreciate a hiding space, these are a great addition to their habitat!

NATURAL BALANCE LIMITED INGREDIENT TREATS

I received MORE treats to review from Chewy.com! The dogs are loving this!

FinchDVM 10788.jpg

These treats are Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Treats, Sweet Potato and Venison Formula. Because Joy is allergic to chicken, we need to be careful with ingredients, and these treats were perfect!

At midnight, I woke the dogs and asked, "Are you guys up for a treat review?"

FinchDVM 10789.jpg

They both said that they were.

OLIVIA THE CAT REVIEWS COSEQUIN CHEWS

Recently, Olivia and her person, veterinary technician Allison Parker, helped me with this post on Cosequin Chews from Chewy.com that I received to review. I chose them especially for Olivia!

I love this picture of Olivia!

I love this picture of Olivia!

She said, "meow" and that she enjoyed them very much.

Olivia is normally on Glycoflex Chews, another treat based glucosamine source.

From Allison, "She definitely likes them, but compared to Glycoflex Chews, I would go through the bag twice as quickly!"

Cosequin Chews have 125 mg of glucosamine per two chews. Glycoflex Chews have 300 mg of glucosamine per two chews.

Overall this seems like a very good product, and Cosequin is a brand I trust completely. It is always nice to have treat options instead of pills or capsules for cats!

Olivia, you look like a natural spokes-cat!

CHEWY DOT COM - HILL'S SCIENCE DIET CRUNCHY FRUIT SNACKS

I LOVE Hill's Science Diet.

Good girl Frankie!

Good girl Frankie!

So it was very fun to receive Hill's Science Diet Crunchy Fruit Snacks from Chewy.com to review.

Luna wasn’t feeling great (she is all better now!), and Joy could not have the treats because she is allergic to chicken. Having just publicly declared my love for Hill's, I feel it is fair to ask, Why is there chicken in a fruit snack?

I brought the treats to work, and my friends helped me gather data.

The subjects:

Whitney's Odin the Goldendoodle Puppy

Yes please!

Yes please!

Jenny's Frankie the Frenchie Puppy

I AM excited.

and Erika's Tiny Taffi Dog

I would love a yum.

I would love a yum.

The snacks were an overwhelming hit! My favorite reaction was Odin's. He hid the snack under his paws, seemed to forget where he had put it, lifted his paws and jumped for joy. He chewed his treat a bit and repeated the game. Eventually he ate it, but I think he got a good ten minutes of play out of it first!

Oh! There you are!

Oh! There you are!

Oh! There you are again!

Oh! There you are again!

Frankie, you are too cute!

Oh my gosh! That face! Frankie may have gotten more than one treat.

All princesses like their treats pre-smashed if they have Tiny Taffy mouths! She ate the WHOLE thing.

CHEWY DOT COM - RACHAEL RAY NUTRISH BEEF SOUP BONES

One of the products I received from Chewy.com to review was a bag of Rachael Ray Nutrish Beef Soup Bones.

10/10 - would order again.

I appreciate a chewy treat that is not made of real bone. Luna loved it, and I love Rachael Ray.*

*I don't actually know Rachael Ray.

The only improvement I would suggest is including only beef. The ingredient list included chicken, which Joy, with her chicken allergies, could not eat. Do not fear! I got her other treats while Luna was eating her soup bone!

Luna is intrigued, willing to keep an open mind.

CHEWY DOT COM - HONEST KITCHEN BONE BROTH

CHEWY DOT COM - HONEST KITCHEN BONE BROTH

I have started a fun project with Chewy.com. They send me a list of fun pet-related things. I choose two to review and they send me those two products at no cost.

The first product I reviewed was a Chicken Soup for the Soul book (10/10, would read again).

The second product I am reviewing is Honest Kitchen's Bone Broth - 10/10, would order again.

FinchDVM 10479.jpg

Joy has chicken allergies. Luna is super picky. This broth is beef based with no chicken and, according to Joy and Luna, very tasty. So it works well for both of them, which is rare in both treats and dog food.

Joy says this is unlike anything she's ever smelled...

Joy says this is unlike anything she's ever smelled...

Luna is so picky that she often skips meals, which, like it does for every Chihuahua client I have ever had, causes endless amounts of worry to our family. Luna has had some pretty serious liver and gastrointestinal issues, so when she does not eat, we are extra concerned. This bone broth may put an end to that, the worry I mean.

Luna does not just want to smell the powder. She wants a taste!

Luna does not just want to smell the powder. She wants a taste!

Both dogs like the warm broth as a soup and as a gravy to their plain old boring food.

It is super easy to reconstitute (like regular chicken and beef broth) and easy to serve. We avoid canned food because, although it can be nutritious, and as a vet I am very grateful it exists, it is gross. This broth is not gross.

FinchDVM 10482.jpg

For natural diets of whole food and high quality ingredients, Honest Kitchen is among the best. This is the first product of theirs that I have tried, and I am very impressed.

FinchDVM 10483.jpg

BUNNY TRAIL!

Remember on the Riley and James website when I would get off on a tangent or two and label it a bunny trail? This is similar. Is it better because I planned it? I don't know, but it is still fun!

The broth is said to be best for Pitta dosha types. "What in the world?" I thought. On the label of the Honest Kitchen Bone Broth is this statement, "To learn more about Ayurvedic and take a fun quiz to learn which dosha your pet belongs to, visit honestkitchen.com/ayurveda."

So I did.

Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine originating in India. Anything I can learn about that can help my patients I am open to. The information on the page is fascinating.

AND Joy is a rare mixture of all three types of dosha, and Luna is a very strong (and strong willed) Pitta. Fun! If you take the quiz and find out what type your dog is or dogs are, let me know!

So this broth is supposed to be good for Joy and Luna, in Ayurveda thinking AND western medicine thinking. It has become a staple in our nutritious treats and supplements collection.

CHEWY DOT COM - CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL - MY CAT'S LIFE

Chicken Soup for the Soul - My Cat's Life - 101 Stories about all the Ages and Stages of Our Feline Family Members

Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Jennifer Quasha

"Another cat? Perhaps. For love there is also a season; its seeds must be resown. But a family cat is not replaceable like a worn out coat or a set of tires. Each new kitten becomes its own cat, and none is repeated. I am four cats old, measuring out my life in friends that have succeeded but not replaced one another. -Irving Townsend. page 319.

What's that in the upper left hand corner? Another product to review next week perhaps?

When I was choosing products to receive and review from  Chewy.com for the first time, my very first choice was a Chicken Soup book. I love these!

Chewy.com is letting me choose two items to review free of charge every month. If there is a product you would like me to review, please let me know!

Of the Chicken Soup books, I chose a cat book because I still miss our Max the Cat and I miss all of my feline patients I can no longer see because of my allergies.

FinchDVM 10475.jpg

My Cat's Life - 10/10 - would read again.

I loved these stories you guys. I took off my judgy pants (there were quite a few outdoor cats and cats giving birth and delayed veterinary care and rehomed cats) and put on my jammie pants and settled in for what turned out to be a very enjoyable time.

I love the individuality and nuances and beauty of cats. All of these traits are here in abundance. I love very old cats the most. They were here too. My favorite story is #79 - The Ingredients of Happiness, by Saralee Perel, because it explores living in the moment with your pet. I also likes that it takes place in a veterinary hospital.

FinchDVM 10477.jpg

It was intriguing to hear how families interpreted information from their veterinary teams as relayed in the stories. It was heartening to realize most families absorb and interpret medical information accurately, even in stressful times.

This book is calming, like the presence of a cat is calming.

FinchDVM 10478.jpg

If you would like to read this book, please let me know. I will write a list of names inside the front cover, and we can pass it around. When I get it back, I plan to read it again!
